2024 - Low G
It’s time to go back to the moon! But before we can send human astronauts, we need robots to study the landing site and construct a suitable habitat. In this game, students had to deal a hilly and bouncy terrain as their robots navigated the lunar surface completing a variety of science and maintenance tasks.

2023 - Incision Decision
Exploring the world of surgical robotics, Incision Decision had teams build robots to perform simulated surgical procedures on a field structured like a human torso. Robots used multiple “surgical tools” for procedures ranging from moving veins around for heart bypasses to autonomously extracting brain “biopsy samples.” Drivers used a wireless camera system to see parts of the field where line of sight was blocked.

2022 - Made 2 Order
Celebrating the 30th anniversary of BEST, students were challenged to build robots which would, themselves build more robots! Themed around order fulfillment and warehouse automation, team robots added missing parts to a field robot, Squeaky. Then, the team robots grabbed on-field controls to guide Squeaky through gathering materials to complete simulated orders.

2021 - Demo Daze
The robots enter an active construction zone, tasked with planning and executing the demolition of a central tower. Of course, no demolition project is can begin until the safety and security of the site is ensure. And no demolition project is complete until the remaining materials are sorted and removed. Teams’ robots accomplished all of these tasks through a mix of human-controlled and autonomous tasks.

2020 - Outbreak
Honey, I shrunk the robots! And sent them in to fight an infection! The teams’ robots were tasked with delivering a vaccine to different cells and isolate infected cells from vulnerable cells.
Georgia BEST took a hiatus this year because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
2019 - Off the Grid
Teams were asked to invent a new robotic system to take on the dangerous job of repairing the power grid after a natural disaster. Robots had to clear debris and reconnect power lines.

2015 - Pay Dirt
Pay Dirt placed teams in a mine scenario in which robots were tasked with collecting various minerals and sorting them into bins. Robots used many types of manipulators and cargo containers to collect and transport the game pieces. This game put an economical spin to harvesting natural resources, as market shift changed the value of the minerals throughout the season based on how much was “mined.” The objective was efficiently harvesting the most valuable resources to score the most points.

2014 - Bladerunner
Blade Runner challenged participants to take the role of a windmill transportation company. Teams had to transport large game pieces across challenging terrain that could cause robots to lose their cargo. Blade Runner allowed teams to cooperate with each other and make difficult transportation tasks quicker by supporting each other. The challenge of Blade Runner was that teams had to either design manipulators that could transport each game piece across the field or teams had to come up with a strategy that only required them to score crucial game pieces.

2013 - Gatekeeper
Gatekeeper required teams to collect different electrical components needed to build a complete CPU. Robots were stationary but were moved around the field using a human operated platform. Teams had to build up inventories of individual components in order to manufacture larger components, and ultimately build a CPU. Winning teams planned out their strategy before competing so they knew exactly what they needed to collect and score in each round, and could optimize their playing time by building up inventory. These teams also had simple manipulators that allowed them to effortlessly switch between tasks during matches.
2012 - Warp XX
Warp XX challenged students to build “space elevator” robots. The robots were tasked with grabbing game pieces on the group, climbing up a pole, and then scoring those pieces in containers and on pipe at the top of the pole. The game pieces ranged from wiffle balls to heavy cardboard boxes cardboard boxes and unworldly foam boards. The most successful robots maximized pole climb speed by calculating the force required to move the robot up the pole, had light and stable arms with specialized manipulators for the game pieces, and centers of gravity near the poles to prevent undue friction and shifting.

2011 - Bugs!
Bugs! required teams to build robots to retrieve “genetically modified bugs”-heavy bean bags, styrofoam balls suspended high above the field, and small moving robots-and place them into containment areas behind fields of obstacles. Bonus points were awarded for retrieving all types of bugs. Retrieving each bug presented a unique challenge, challenging teams to build versatile robots with the available parts. Winning robots had long but stable and responsive arms with versatile claws capable of retrieving all types of bugs. In addition, carrying the heavy bean bags was particularly challenging, forcing the winning teams to use counterweights on their robots to prevent them from flipping over.

2010 - Total Recall
Total Recall’s theme was manufacturing, specifically manufacturing using the six sigma practice to minimize mistakes. The game involved scoring correct but not defective game pieces. Robots had to score golf balls of a certain color in bins, place traffic cones in stands, and sort plastic eggs by magnetism and then score the correct type plastic egg in those traffic cones. The color of the defective golf balls and whether the defective plastic eggs contained magnets or not was determined by having the robot read a data port and then displaying a signal to the drivers. Scoring defective products would reduce the team’s sigma, which multiplied their score. The winning robots had large containers capable of transporting many golf balls at once; some even had detachable containers to allow the robots to perform other tasks while the containers were filled. Determining which plastic eggs contained magnets proved to be quite difficult, although some teams created custom sensors capable of doing so.
2009 - High Octane
High Octane called on students to goggle up and start mixing chemicals. The objective was for students to collect common molecules (CO2 and H2O) and combine them with essential resources (energy and catalysts) to complete a series of chemical reactions. The ultimate goal was to produce the ever valuable isooctane, but intermediate molecules were tracked in a team’s virtual inventory, to be used as ingredients in subsequent matches.

2008 - Just Plane Crazy
Students set their sights high by building a robot for building planes. Teams used their robots to retrieve aircraft subassemblies and complete an aircraft from these components. Game tasks included safely managing and navigating the parts warehouse, assembling plane components, and conducting a test flight by hanging their planes on a central structure.
